Watch this video about Verrucae – what to expect, and how to treat them.
So what’s a verrucae? Well, a verrucae is something you don’t want or need, for sure.
What is a Verrucae?
The basic science is a verrucae (also known as a plantar wart) is an overproduction of skin in reaction to a viral infection. Warts and viruses are basically never desirable.
How to Recognise a Verrucae?
They present as a patch or spot of tough, thick skin/callous. Sometimes you see little black dots in the centre. Often people call these “roots” which they’re not but that’s what people commonly say.
Can Verrucae Be Painful?
They can be painful when they reach a certain size and press into your flesh – that’s often when a patient will book in for help.
Are Verrucae Contagious?
And the biggie is they’re contagious. Big time! You will have picked it up from someone or somewhere – usually sharing communal facilities where people have bare feet. And unless you’re extremely careful, you will pass it on to someone else.
Should You Treat a Verrucae?
I would always recommend getting rid of a verrucae. They can, in theory, disappear in their own time but it’s unlikely. It’s better if they’re helped along using certain measures. Even if they’re small and stable, there’s no good reason to just leave a verrucae alone. Mostly they get bigger and there’s the risk of spreading, including on yourself.
